Super Smash Bros. Brawl – New Super Mario Bros “Main Theme” (rem. Shogo Sakai)November 16, 2009
Today was the big release of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. I’m not quite sure why it came out on a Sunday, considering you usually give kids a whole weekend to play their games. Maybe it was so they could spend Saturday doing homework? Anyway, as a celebration, here’s the New Super Mario Bros. (Koji Kondo, 2006) “Main Theme” as remixed in Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008). This is probably the best rendition of the song.
The “Main Theme” of New Super Mario Bros. Wii is actually another version of this one, though the arrangement doesn’t sound all that great to me. The Brawl version has great dynamics and good pacing with a lot going on in the background. It’s also got a nice use of the guitar and saxophone, as well as a fun drum solo. The Wii version of the game has a little too much bass and plays a bit slow. I guess if the game is a bit more slower paced, it makes sense, but on top of that, the synth lines and style really don’t impress me (it sounds more like hip hop). Oh yeah, in the game, when the little ‘wah!’ sfx play, the enemies jump as part of a little dance. It helps make the audio a little more dynamic and diagetic.
Shogo Sakai’s other works include Mother 3 (2006), Heavy Barrel (1990), and Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland (2002)
